Centerpiece Ideas

Centerpieces are literally one of most viewed parts of your wedding reception.  You basically have 8-12 people in a circle, staring at your centerpiece for at least two hours.  Let’s focus on the many centerpiece options available; some of your more traditional options as well as unusual ideas.

  • In a past article, MJ talked a little about Mason Jars and their special use as candle holders.  That is only one way to creatively incorporate candles into your table’s centerpiece.  If you want candles on your table, but wish to add a little more flare, try some different types of holders.  Floating candles in vases of water, dropping candle sticks in wine jars, or engraved wooden box candle holders are just a few other options for adding extra mood lighting.

  • It is no surprise that flowers are being mentioned in an article about wedding centerpieces, but again, let’s take this classic idea and mix it up!  Penelope’s past article on baby’s breath showed us that baby’s breath can stand alone as the centerpiece.  It is inexpensive and very easy to arrange.  When there is any option for your wedding to stand out from others, it makes it all the better when the option also saves you much needed cash.  Vases of water, with or without the candles on top, pedals or small flowers in the vase, has such a nice look.

…or how about this great idea?  Take small vases or dessert trays, flip them over, and have a single large flower on display.  Again the candles are optional but add a little more flair!

  • A picture is worth a 1000 words, right?  Since you don’t get to spend much time talking to every guest, share some photos as your centerpieces.  Use your engagement photos or pictures from past vacations.  For the tables with closer family and friends, use pictures of you with the people sitting at the table.  Your pictures can also act as an ice breaker at tables mixed with strangers who can chat about your pictures.

  • Candy can be a great centerpiece.  Pick a color, any color!  I bet you can find a candy to match your wedding colors perfectly.  If you are having trouble finding the right color, special order it.  Special ordering candy is not your cheapest centerpiece option, but I bet it will look great as eye candy! (I know I know, lame!!) Have a scoop and bags nearby for everyone to take some home after the reception.

  • A co-worker once told me if I ever needed a moment of zen, I could go in his office, sit at his desk and stare at his fishbowl for a few minutes.  How about you offer the same opportunity to your wedding guests?  If you don’t want to use actually fishbowls, wide vases work perfectly as a temporary living space for our small friends.  As a bonus, if anyone is interested in taking home a few fish, they will get an extra party favor!

  • Finally, I found this idea in my research.  If you are having an October wedding, or even just an autumn wedding, how about some beautifully carved pumpkins?  A monogram or the date of your wedding would look great carved into a pumpkin as a centerpiece to the tables!
